Introducing Our New Web Developer and Staff Writer, Dr. Julio Vega
Last updated: Aug 27, 2021
We’re excited to introduce Dr. Julio Vega—our new Stats-of-1 Web Developer and (Staff) Writer! Dr. Vega will contribute content from his field of expertise in processing and featurizing app and sensor data. He’ll also help lead the technical side of Stats-of-1, and take our website capabilities to the next level.
Julio first reached out to us to provide some digital phenotyping resources he’d helped developed or used in his own work. He then also generously offered his time and skills in web development—which we were more than happy to accept!
Here’s a little more on Julio.
How’d you get into n-of-1 studies and single-case designs?
I got into N-of-1 studies thanks to the capabilities of smartphones and wearable devices to collect sensor data 24/7 and the need to support people with highly idiosyncratic health conditions. Given the initial evidence that we can use mobile data to quantify human behavior, N-of-1 studies and SCD became potentially powerful tools to create or study individual models and interventions. This is a perspective that my supervisors and I first took during my Ph.D. when exploring personalized tracking of Parkinson’s Disease symptoms.
What do you envision for Stats-of-1?
I would like to see Stats-of-1 becoming a knowledge hub for anything related to N-of-1 studies and SCDs. A place where researchers from multiple disciplines can connect and spark collaborations.
Anything else you’d like to share from your own story-of-1?
The tools and methods to work with these designs are still in an early stage and growing fast. I have been involved in the development of two such software tools (the AWARE Framework and RAPIDS), and I can’t wait to see what the community creates next, especially when it comes to statistical and machine learning analysis methods.
